Paul Simon – ‘Graceland 25th Anniversary Edition’ will be released on June 5th

The 25 anniversary of ‘Graceland’, groundbreaking album from Paul Simon will be commemorated with musical and film celebrations stretching into the summer. A special ‘Graceland 25th Anniversary Edition‘ will be released on 5th June by Relapse Records.

Special Graceland 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Box Set – a two CD/two DVD set which including the remastered original album, the “Under African Skies” documentary film extended interviews, the original 1987 “African Concert” from Zimbabwe, three original music videos and the iconic “Saturday Night Live” performance of “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.“

The box set also features the audio narrative “The Story of ‘Graceland’” as told by Paul Simon, replicas of an original Graceland poster and a handwritten lyrics pad, plus a deluxe 80-page book featuring new and archival photos and interviews with Paul Simon. Epica – sluit met Xandria de tour in Nederland af

Het Paard van Troje in Den Haag heeft de eer om Epica onderdak te bieden voor het laatste optreden van de deze tour in Nederland.

Na een bezoek aan Griekenland volgt er een korte pauze. Daarna zal de band ruim een maand door de Amerika en Canada toeren. Ook staan ze op de jubileum editie van Metal Female Voices Fest.

Door het mooie weer, waren er vroeg in de middag al een paar Nederlandse en Franse fans verzameld voor de zaal. De grote drukte kwam pas vlak voordat de deuren opengingen. De organisatie kwam tot twee keer vriendelijk melden, dat de deuren iets later opgingen in verband met een technische storing.

Xandria brengt Duitse symfonische metal van de bovenste plank. Sinds Lisa Middelhauve (vrouw van bassitst Nils) de band in 2008 om persoonlijke redenen verliet, heeft de band na een paar wisselingen in 2012 een nieuwe zangeres gevonden, Manuela Kraller.

In deze nieuwe setting is de vijfde plaat ‘Neverworld’s End‘ opgenomen, en hebben ze Epica tien optredens vergezeld in deze tour.

De band heeft met Manuela duidelijk gekozen voor een wat steviger repetoire; de nieuwe CD is geen voort borduursel op eerdere stijlen. De zangeres laat op een positive manier duidelijk merken dat ze de nieuwe frontvrouw is.

Ook zij ontkomt er niet aan om ouder werk te zingen. Waar dat bij veel andere bands regelmatig een teleurstelling is, doet Kraller dit voortreffelijk. Je ontkomt er niet aan om een vergelijking te trekken met origineel. De krachtige zang en performance van Manuela, laat je dat snel vergeten.

Sinds het optreden afgelopen oktober tijdens MFVF, is de band duidelijk meer een team geworden. De leden vormen een geheel en dat vertaalt zich in een dynamische podium act. De zangeres prikkelt de fans om te melden dat Xandria nog veel in petto heeft voor het komende MFVF festival. Haar duet met Simone Simons is een mooi sluitstuk van deze tour.

Xandria weet de zaal zonder enig moeite te boeien, na “Valentine” wordt het publiek verder opgezweept met “Blood On my Hands.”  Dan is goed te horen dat het publiek zijn teksten kent:  er wordt goed mee gedaan met de interactieve act.

Nieuwe en oude nummers worden flink afgewisseld: van “Save My Life”, “Euphoria”, “Cursed”, “The Lost Elysion” totdat “Ravenheart” aangekondigd wordt. Bij dit nummer kan je er niet om heen om terug te denken aan de tijd dat Lisa dit zong. Deze uitvoering is geen imitatie, maar een heel eigen geluid.  Een welverdiend applaus zwelt aan na afsluiter “India.”

Na een flinke ombouw van dertig minuten klinkt “Karma” en kan het feest beginnen. Epica laat goed merken dat ze er veel zin in hebben. Er wordt weer groots uitgepakt op dit laatste – net niet uitverkocht – optreden.

Na “Monopoly On Truth” en “Sensorium” komt Frank Schiphorst (MaYaN) op voor “Internal Warfare.” Spoedig opgevolgd door “Sancta Terra” met een tweede gastbijdrage. Namelijk Marcella Bovio (Stream of Passion) en Manuela Kraller (Xandria) in duet met Simone Simons. Een kippenvel moment bij de fans.

Tijdens gevoelige “Delirium” kan de zaal even op adem komen. Totdat het brandalarm af gaat, wat ervoor zorgt dat de stroom van alle stage-appertatuur uit viel. De band en publiek staan plots “droog” wat door Simone wordt opgelost door persoonlijk bier te brengen voor de fans.

Drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek  maakt van de gelegenheid gebruik om een, niet geheel onverdienstelijke, drumsolo ten gehore te brengen. Na dit kleine oponthoud, komt de energie terug op “Blank Infinity.” De zaal gaat pas ect los op “Storm Of Sorrow.”

Het overbekende “The Phantom Agony” is  het laatste nummer voor de break. Daarna krijgt het publiek nog een mooie serie oude- en nieuwe nummers te horen. Met als hoogtepunt “Cry For The Moon” wat door Marcela Bovio op viool wordt ondersteund.

Titletrack van de nieuwste plaat komt voorbij ” Requiem For The Indifferent“. Met “Unleashed” en “Consign To Oblivion” als afsluiter neemt de band voorlopig afscheid van Nederland.

Trixter – New Audio Machine

Trixter is a band from New Jersey which was formed in 1983 by Steve Brown, Doug Cowie (Dougie C.), Pete Archibald (Pete Loran) and Mike Pane. The drummer Mike Pane was replaced by drummer Mark Spreiregen just after playing with the band once and the line-up was then complete.

Trixter achieved success mainly in the 1980s ; they played in clubs with bands like Skid Row and Kix. They were later signed by Mechanic/MCA for their self-titled debut album in 1990. This album was really successful with songs like “One in A Million” and “Give it to Me Good”. It even made it to the Billboard Charts and went on to become gold.

After this success, Trixter toured with Poison, Scorpions and Warrant nationwide around 1990-1991. The second debut album ‘Hear!‘ is released in 1992 and Trixter also toured with KISS.

Steve Brown announced on December 2007 that Trixter would be reuniting for the ‘Give it to You Good‘ tour. For the new album ‘New Audio Machine’ which is about to be released in 20 April 2012, Trixter worked with Glen Burtnik from STYX and Snake Sabo and Rachel Bolan from Skid Row in the songwriting process.

The album starts with “Drag Me Down”. From the first second, the song has that “oldies” vibe and it makes the listener think that it is a new beginning. This also means that Trixter is back and they are stronger than ever.  The guitar riffs in this song make it even better. This song is like the summary of the whole album even though it’s the first song.

This catchy and strong atmosphere continues in the second song “Get On It”. I think from this moment, the listener will probably think that the album is just too good and this might be right. In the third song “Dirty Love”, there is a little bit of Skid Row and a little bit of Mötley Crüe with awesome guitar riffs and a powerful sound. Surely, Trixter still knows how to make the listener headbang and cheer.

Even though the songs “Dirty Love” or “Get On It” might be full of passion, the listener can feel the real passion in the song “Machine.” I think this song is also proof that Trixter is full of confidence which is really important considering they have recorded an album after more than ten years.

The mood of the album slows down with the song “Live for the Day”. Surely, when it’s about the eighties it reminds me of a bit of Bon Jovi back then, a good example. “The Coolest Thing” can also be considered as slow compared to other songs like “Dirty Love” or “Ride“.

Trixter also proves us that they have developed musically with the song “Tattoos & Misery”. I think this song is quite different from the others, it has more of a modern rock vibe but this shouldn’t be considered as something negative but rather as a compliment.

Even though almost all of the songs are awesome, the ‘peak’ of the album is in the lyrics of the song “Save Your Soul”.  It has the true  rock’n’roll spirit and you will appreciate Trixter for that.

Conclusion

Generally, the album is really good and successful. I think that Trixter has managed to ‘caught up’ with the scene and ‘New Audio Machine’ can be considered as their best album so far. My favorites from the album are “ Drag me Down”, “Dirty Love” , “Machine” and “Save Your Soul”. Especially the listener can feel the energy and sincerity of the album from the first song and it becomes like an addiction after that.

This album is a must for every eighties heavy metal fan; but I would also recommend this album to any rock listener in general. It’s simple but it has the energy. Once again, thanks to Trixter for making an amazing album full of guitar riffs, awesome lyrics and a powerful sound !

Huntenpop – Lacuna Coil en Blood Red Shoes bevestigd

Het Britse duo Blood Red Shoes en het Italiaanse Lacuna Coil zullen op 11 augustus hun opwachting maken op Huntenpop in Ulft.

Het tweedaagse festival bevestigde eerder al de komst van Triggerfinger, Crystal Fighters, Racoon, Reel Big Fish en Alain Clark.

Naast Pinkpop komt de Britse band Blood Red Shoes naar het DRU Park in Ulft komt. Een duo dat een voorliefde heeft voor popliedjes  met rauwe behuizing. Op hun nieuwe plaat In Time To Voices is dat niet veel anders, al voegt de band daar regelmatig lekkere stevige rock en (disco)punk aan toe.

Met Lacuna Coil haalt Huntenpop opnieuw een wereldtopper in het gothic-metalgenre binnen. De band is terug met het nieuwe album  Dark Adrenaline, welke louter lovende recensies opleverde. Daarnaast heeft Huntenpop de band ook nog eens exclusief, als enige Nederlandse festival, naar Nederland weten te halen.

Eerder bevestigde het tweedaagse festival al de namen van Triggerfinger, Racoon, Crystal Fighters, Reel Big Fish, Shaking Godspeed, Alain Clark, Miss Montreal, Dope D.O.D., Muchachito Bombo Infierno, Bellowhead, Vintage Trouble, The Backcorner Boogie Band, Le Cirque Du Platzak en The Bruurkes.

Metal Female Voices Fest – special anniversary and contest

Belgium festival Metal Female Voices Fest celebrates this year their tenth anniversary.  At the moment more bands are added and the line-up is getting better and better. Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil, Epica, Delain and Xandria are the headliners.

On 19,20 and 21 October 2012 in Oktoberhalle, Wieze in Belgium te anniversary will take place. Three days filled wit excellent bands: MFVF wants to excel all previous editions. Rising talents and famous bands are united together. From all over the world coming to this unique indoor festival.

Contest

Also there is a new contest ‘The Rock Station’ by Sander Gommans (songwriter and guitarist ex-After Forever). When you are a solo musician, or play in a band, you are welcome to join this special contest. Gommans will begin an all-in-one music academy. Besides songwriting for many projects like Trillium, he wants to assist musicians in every possible way.

James Morrison – ‘Beautiful Life’ vierde single van nieuw album

Vandaag brengt de Britse zanger James Morrison zijn single ’Beautiful Life’ uit. Dit is de vierde single van de nieuwe plaat ‘ The Awakening‘ die in herfst 2011 uit kwam bij Universal Music.

Een paar maanden geleden speelde James Morrison nog in een uitverkocht Amsterdam. Daar kwamen veel  bekende hits voorbij. Waaronder ‘Slave To The Music‘ de eerste single van ‘The Awakening‘ die goud haalde.

Inmiddels tourde de zanger door heel Europa. Om deze zomer op vele festivals te spelen. Daarvan is Hampton Court Palace Festival wel erg bijzonder in  Engeland. In de tuinen van dit beroemde kasteel speelt Morrison voor tweeduizend muziekliefhebbers.

Ilse DeLange – nieuwe single ‘Hurricane’ als voorproefje van komend album

De nieuwe single van Ilse DeLange getiteld ‘Hurricane‘ is vandaag officieel uit. In september komt het nieuwe album uit bij Universal Music.

Dit achtste album is de opvolger van ‘Next To Me‘ uit 2010. Onlangs won de zangeres nog een 3FM Award in de categorie ‘Beste Zangeres.’

Cirque Du Soleil – wereldberoemde show Alegría in december naar Rotterdam

Cirque Du Soleil komt op vrijdag 7 tot en met zondag 9 december naar Rotterdam. De wereldberoemde productie  ’Alegría‘ staat dan in Ahoy. Op zaterdag 19 mei aanstaande start om 10.00 uur de kaartverkoop.

Alegría is het Spaanse woord voor vreugde, jubel en opgetogenheid. Tevens de meest fascinerende show van Cirque du Soleil. Een indrukwekkende productie: een internationale cast van vijfenvijftig artiesten en muzikanten uit vijftien verschillende landen.

Met flamboyante kostuums en de bijpassende barokke stijl is de live uitvoering een waar spektakel. De live uitgevoerde muziek ondersteunt de acrobatiek op een groot podium. Verwacht  adembenemende acrobatiek met onder andere de Synchro Trapeze, maar ook de ritmische en gevaarlijke Fire-Knife Dance.

FortaRock – nog vijfhonderd kaarten voor vierde editie

Er zijn nog vijfhonderd kaarten verkrijgbaar voor FortaRock. Dit eendaagse festival wordt op 2 juni 2012 gehouden in Park Brakkenstein te Nijmegen.

Dit jaar is het de vierde editie met een knaller van een line-up. Zo komen metal grootheden als Slayer en Anthrax exclusief naar Nederland. Ook Trivium, Lamb Of God en Machine Head spelen op FortaRock.

De Vrienden van Amstel LIVE! – eerste namen voor jubileum editie bekend

De eerste namen voor het jubileum van De Vrienden van Amstel LIVE! 2013 zijn bekend. Op deze vijftiende editie zal Xander de Bousonjé de gastheer zijn in de grootste kroeg van Nederland.

Een record aantal artiesten zal in januari Ahoy te Rotterdam aan doen. Onder meer Marco Borsato, Nick & Simon, BLØF, Ilse Delange, Gers Padoel, Di-Rect, Acda en de Munnik, VanVelzen en De Dijk.

De afgelopen vijftien jaar, wat terug gaat tot 1999, zijn er meer dan honderd verschillende artiesten te gast geweest bij De Vrienden van Amstel Live! Dit jaar is Marco Borsato voor de eerste keer aanwezig en zal voor Ilse DeLange en BLØF dit jubileum erg speciaal zijn. Zij stonden namelijk ook op de eerste editie in 1999.

Concertreeks

De achtste avond is toegevoegd aan de concertreeks wegens de grote vraag naar kaarten. Op vrijdag 18 januari 2013 zijn nu ook kaarten verkrijgbaar. Voor de andere zeven concerten op 19 – 20 – 23 – 24 – 25 – 26 en 27 januari zijn nog beperkt kaarten te koop. Er worden na deze acht data geen extra shows meer toegevoegd!

Within Temptation – jubilee show ‘Elements’ in Sportpaleis Antwerpen

Within Temptation will celebrate their fifteenth jubilee, after their debut ‘Enter’ from 1997.  ‘Elements’ is a special show on 13th November 2012 in Sportpaleis Antwerpen, Belgium. The tickets are on sale this Friday 11th May on 11.00 hours.

The band describes ‘Elements’ as the most significant event in the history of Within Temptation: “It’s exceeding everything you’ve ever seen, heard or experienced from us before.” Over the years the band is grown to the best Dutch rock band on international level.

Besides some unexpected guests also the Il Novecento Orchestra, famous from Night Of The Proms, will perform on stage. Expect an energetic show with visually elements like fireworks and specially made videos.

Maiden UniteD – second album in the making and Dutch tour

The acoustic Iron Maiden cover band Maiden UniteD announced to release a second album after their successful debut ‘Mind The Acoustic Pieces‘ (2010).

At the moment the band is working in the studio to record new material. The songs on the new album will be a selection from all the Iron Maiden releases until 1988. Maiden UniteD’s debut  album from 2010 is a homage to Iron Maiden’s first album ‘Piece Of Mind‘ from 1983.

Aside from the original band members Damian Wilson (vocals), Ruud Jolie (guitar), Joey Bruers (bass), Marco Kuypers (piano) and Mike Coolen (drums), the album also holds some interesting guest performances.

Hultsfred festival – The line-up is almost complete with Slash,Garbage and The Cure

This year the Hultsfred festival in Sweden takes place from 14 till 16 June 2012. The line-up for this year’s festival is almost complete.

Some of the headlining bands are The Cure, The Stone Roses, Mumford & Sons, The XX, Justice, Slash, The Cardigans and Garbage.

A new sound is represented by artists like James Blake and The Kooks. A more alternative sound is created by Katzenjammer and Eagles of Death Metal. A wide spectrum of music styles are united.

North Sea Jazz – programma compleet

Het  programma van het North Sea Jazz Festival is compleet voor de zevenendertigste editie op 6, 7 en 8 juli 2012 in Rotterdam.

Ondermeer Archie Shepp Quartet, John Hiatt, Esperanza Spalding Radio Music Society, Robert Cray en Chic featuring Nile Rodgers treden op. Ook James Morrison, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Caro Emerald,Taj Mahal, Betty Wright en Rumer zijn bevestigd.

Verder komen Waylon, Maceo Parker, Trijntje Oosterhuis, John Scofield Hollowbody Band, Christian Scott, Michel Camilo Trio en Mike Stern Richard Bona Band naar het driedaagse festival.

Op het programma staat een groot aantal speciale projecten waaronder ‘Nights on Earth‘ van het Metropole Orkest onder leiding van Vince Mendoza. Met muzikanten uit de hele wereld: de Amerikanen John Scofield en Joe Lovano, gitarist Lê Nguyên en vocaliste Lilian Vieira.

Dit jaar brengt North Sea Jazz weer een eerbetoon aan Miles Davis, onder de titel ‘Miles Smiles‘. Daarin spelen Kenny Garrett,Robben Ford, Joey DeFrancesco, Darryl Jones en Omar Hakim, die allemaal op verschillende momenten als bandlid van de grote Miles speelden.

Eerder werden Van Morrison, Michael Kiwanuka, Lenny Kravitz, Ahmad Jamal, Pat Metheny Unity Band,George Benson, Rufus Wainwright and Band, Tony Bennett, D’Angelo, The Kyteman Orchestra, Wayne Shorter Quartet, Joe Bonamassa en Aloe Blacc al bevestigd.

Artist in Residence

Dit jaar heeft het festival weer een artist in residence: Joshua Redman. Redman is een van de nieuwe iconen in de jazz, die samen met leeftijdsgenoten als Branford Marsalis en Roy Hargrove, midden jaren ’90 de voorhoede van de akoestische jazz vormde. Op vrijdag doet hij een gastoptreden met het Metropole Orkest. Zaterdag geeft Joshua Redman twee bijzondere optredens. Ten eerste is daar James Farm. En het Joshua Redman Axis Quartet beleeft zijn Nederlandse première. Op zondag geeft hij een concert met The Bad Plus.

Jazz in the Third Space

De jazzscene ontwikkelt zich steeds internationaler. In de huidige tijd van digitale revolutie, is naast thuis en werk een derde ruimte ontstaan. Daarin legt en onderhoudt men gemakkelijk contacten over de hele wereld, en kan op afstand muzikale bestanden uitwisselen. Er ontstaan groepen met verschillende nationaliteiten, waarbij iedereen eigen bagage meeneemt en waardoor de klank van jazz verandert. Dit is te horen bij onder meer Dhafer Youssef Quartet, Vijay Iyer, Oguz Büyükberber met Simon Nabatov, Wolter Wierbos & Tobias Klein, Kinan Azmeh, Dinuk Wijeratne & Eric Vloeimans, Tom Rainey Trio met Ingrid Laubrock & Mary Halvorson.

New Urban Jazz

Een nieuwe generatie jazzmuzikanten heeft de jazzhistorie goed bestudeerd en voegt daar vijftig jaar soul, R&B en hiphop aan toe. Zoals Gregory Porter, José Jamesen Robert Glasper Experiment.

Clean Feed Records

Het vooruitstrevende Portugese label Clean Feed bestaat tien jaar. Het label brengt muziek uit van de top van de Amerikaanse improvisatie, maar ook van belangrijke Europese spelers. Op het festival zien we de Amerikaanse pianist Angelica Sanchezmet onder meer de Franse gitarist Marc Ducret. Pianiste Kris Davis komt uit Canada en in het trio van de Amerikaanse drummer Tom Rainey speelt de Duitse saxofoniste Ingrid Laubrock.
