Bruce Springsteen – Wrecking Ball

Zoals de naam van het album al doet vermoeden,  blijkt Bruce Springsteen op slooptocht. Met een ware sloopkogel raast hij op de bankiers en de gladde, pakdragende zakkenvullers af.

Zijn gloednieuwe album ‘Wrecking Ball’ bestaat uit krachtige strijdballades en muzikale oorlogsverklaringen. Met opgestroopte mouwen, opkomend voor de ‘working man’, lekker klagen over hoe mis het is met de wereld.

Als Amerikaans vaderfiguur kan de inmiddels 62-jarige rocker uit New Jersey dat als geen ander. De eerste vier zinnen van het eerste nummer ‘We Take Care Of Our Own’ zijn karakteristiek.

“I’ve been knocking on the door that holds the throne, I’ve been looking for the map that leads me home, I’ve been stumbling on good hearts turn to stone, The road of good intentions has gone dry as a bone”. Het cynisme giert ervan af en dat is nog maar het begin op zijn zeventiende album.

Het ene nummer cynisch, het andere optimistisch, maar duidelijk is dat ieder nummer zijn boodschap heeft. De teksten van Springsteen werden, ten tijden zijn definitieve doorbraak, met het album ‘Born To Run’ vergeleken met die van Bob Dylan. Een album als ‘Wrecking Ball‘ bewijst vandaag de dag nog, dat die uitspraken uit de jaren zeventig niet onterecht waren. Het bewijst ook dat protestzang, ondanks dat we het niet zoveel meer horen, nog niet ten onder is.

Het opvallende aan ‘Wrecking Ball‘ is dat, ondanks de uitermate kritische toon, The Boss eigenlijk altijd een onverklaarbaar optimistische sfeer in zijn nummers houdt. Ze komen niet zeurderig over, maar worden gezongen met opgeheven hoofd en opgestroopte mouwen.

Alleen bij ‘Jack Of All Trades’ laat hij zich gaan. Een langzaam en sentimenteel nummer, waarin het gevoel van droefheid en hopeloosheid overheerst. Met zingende instrumenten weet het nummer ook een tactisch instrumentaal middenstuk te creëren. Vervolgens knalt Springsteen hier bozig overheen met de tekst “The banker man grows fat, the working man grows thin, it all happened before, it will happen again”. Om vervolgens triest en uitzichtloos ver te  zingen. Afsluiten met een doordachte gitaarsolo, dat maakt het nummer compleet.

Naast dat het album in verhouding modern klinkt, heeft Springsteen meerdere stijlen weten te gebruiken. De Ierse invloeden die zijn nummers een folk-sfeer geven, zijn natuurlijk concreet aanwezig. Maar wat ook goed werkt, is een gospel sfeer zoals met een koort gecreëerd is in het nummer ‘Shackled And Drawn’.

Als een ware verzetsleider, een moderne westerse versie van Ché Guevara, zingt hij strijdend wat er op dit moment precies mis is met de wereld in financiële crisis. De bankiers stoppen miljoenen in hun zak en de arbeiders werken zich kapot voor brood op de plank. En dat met een vrolijk en vredig gospelkoor. Het bevat een onbeschrijflijk gevoel van woest sarcasme. Dat alles maakt dit nummer een van de krachtigste van het album.

Conclusie

Kritischer en bozer dan ooit, op misschien het donkere album ‘Nebraska’ na, smijt The Boss naar de problematiek van vandaag de dag. Veel meer dan in zijn laatste albums ‘Magic’ en ‘Working On A Dream’ heeft ‘Wrecking Ball’ een boodschap. Er staat geen nummer op het album dat niet goed klinkt. Hoewel het allemaal echte Springsteen’s zijn, kent ‘Wrecking Ball‘ een ontastbare verfrissing, die onbewust verschrikkelijk goed bevalt. Dat deze patriottistische vaderfiguur een bijzondere man is, moge duidelijk zijn. Maar met je zeventiende studioalbum nog zo weten te verbazen, dat is maar voor weinig artiesten weggelegd.

Adele – winner of six Grammy Awards, mourning Whitney Houston

Adele won six Grammy Awards, including the song of the year for “Rolling in the Deep,” best album ” 21” and best solo performance with “Someone Like You.”  

It was a ceremony that had the difficult task of celebrating music’s best while mourning the loss of Whitney Houston.

Adele’s first performance since her vocal cord surgery, was outstanding. ”I can’t believe I’m getting emotional already,” she said after picking up the latter award. “And seeing as it’s a vocal performance, I need to thank my doctors, I suppose, who brought my voice back.”

Another big winner of five Grammy’s; the Foo Fighters, noted that they made their album “Wasting Light” in a garage. List of all winners on AP.

 

“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of making music is what’s most important. Singing into a microphone, learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do,” according to Dave Grohl.

Among the evening’s performances was a dance-heavy number by Chris Brown, a performance by Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen, who kicked off the show by performing his new song “We Take Care of Our Own.“

But the evening’s most moving moment came as Jennifer Hudson emerged to sing one of Houston’s signature songs, “I Will Always Love You.” Dressed in black, with only the accompaniment of a piano, Hudson appeared to fight back tears as she sang the song, ending with the line, “Whitney, we will always love you.“

The show started off on a somber note, as host LL Cool J appeared in black, and told the audience: “There is no way around this. We’ve had a death in our family.” In his performance of “Runaway Baby,” Bruno Mars also mentioned the death: “Tonight we’re celebrating. Tonight we’re celebrating the beautiful Miss Whitney Houston.” And Stevie Wonder said: “To Whitney up in heaven, we all love you.”

Houston died on the eve of the Grammys at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where she was preparing to attend a pre-Grammy party. Still, while Houston’s death cast a shadow over the night’s winners, it did not obscure them. Among them was Chris Brown, who was performing on the stage for the first time since he dropped out of 2009′s broadcast. Brown also won best R&B album.

Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt paid tribute to Etta James, the legend who died last month.

Bruce Springsteen – new album details

Bruce Springsteen will release  his new album ‘Wrecking Ball‘ on 2th March 2012 on Columbia Records. Marking his seventien studio album, it features eleven new Springsteen recordings.

‘Wrecking Ball’ is produced by Ron Aniello with Bruce Springsteen and executive producer Jon Landau. A special edition will also be available and include two bonus tracks and exclusive artwork and photography.

Said long-time manager Jon Landau, “Bruce has dug down as deep as he can to come up with this vision of modern life. The lyrics tell a story you can’t hear anywhere else and the music is his most innovative of recent years. The writing is some of the best of his career and both veteran fans and those who are new to Bruce will find much to love on ‘Wrecking Ball.’”
