Metal Female Voices Fest – special anniversary and contest

Belgium festival Metal Female Voices Fest celebrates this year their tenth anniversary.  At the moment more bands are added and the line-up is getting better and better. Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil, Epica, Delain and Xandria are the headliners.

On 19,20 and 21 October 2012 in Oktoberhalle, Wieze in Belgium te anniversary will take place. Three days filled wit excellent bands: MFVF wants to excel all previous editions. Rising talents and famous bands are united together. From all over the world coming to this unique indoor festival.

Contest

Also there is a new contest ‘The Rock Station’ by Sander Gommans (songwriter and guitarist ex-After Forever). When you are a solo musician, or play in a band, you are welcome to join this special contest. Gommans will begin an all-in-one music academy. Besides songwriting for many projects like Trillium, he wants to assist musicians in every possible way.

Diabulus In Musica – singer Zuberoa about sexism and labeling bands in metal

Spanish symphonic metal band Diabulus In Musica concurs more parts of the world since their debut ‘Secrets‘ in 201o. In Europe the band will tour with Delain this fall and perform on the Metal Female Voices Fest in October.

Second album ‘Wanderer‘ is well received by the press. Muzikantenweb reviewed it with an 7 out of 10. Reason enough for an introduction with singer Zuberoa Aznárez.

Your second album ‘Wanderer’ is more bombastic and orchestral than your first album ‘Secrets‘. How did you manage to create this sound?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “Well, I think that we learnt many things when we did ‘Secrets’. You always try to improve what you have done in the past and I think we did it well in this new album. But I have to say that there are still many things that we could improve in the future, at least we’ll try.

For ‘The Wanderer’ we didn’t work with any producer. Ad Sluijter  (ex-guitarist Epica)gave us some advices in the pre-production process but it was ourselves who deal with all the orchestral arrangements.”

Your band is formed in 2006, how do you still get energized en do you see each other every week to play together?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “Haha, we are above all friends and we always try to have fun in the rehearsals. It also helps that things are working well: the new album, the gigs, the feedback from our fans. It is not always an easy path, but we talk a lot and discuss many things until we get a solution that works out the best for the band.”

If you have any musical ideas; how do you share this ideas with the other bandmembers?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “We work a lot at home with our personal computers. We record our ideas at the computer and usually we add all the instruments and arrangements. Then we share mp3’s of the songs and we share our thoughts, propose changes, etc. I think it’s a good way to work and test new things.”

Sexism

How does it feel to be a part of the gothic metal female fronted bands?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “To be honest, I don’t see ‘female fronted gothic metal’ as a real genre and I don’t consider my band inside that ‘group’. At the beginning there weren’t many female vocalists so it was maybe normal to create that new tag, but now there are many different bands of many different styles inside the so called ‘female fronted metal’ genre.

The only thing these bands have in common is that the singer is a girl, but in my opinion, that’s not enough to create a new genre. For example, in other styles as pop or jazz, nobody distinguishes between a ‘female’ or a ‘male fronted’ band: so I cannot really understand why we do it in metal. A girl can growl, sing classical, rock.

What it makes a genre is above all the music ( a female vocalist can be from death metal to symphonic metal or rock) not only the sex of the singer. There is still too much sexism within metal; many people should start to open their minds.”

Lot’s of bands are happy to say that they are no longer gothic metal. How do you feel about the fact that you are a part of the scene?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “Well I don’t think we are a gothic band. I’m even not sure what  ’gothic metal’ is, but I usually relate it with darker and above all slower music, like Theatre of Tragedy for example, and our music differs a lot from that. We  have in common the two voices (female melodic and grunts) but no more than that.

Actually I would say our music is really eclectic. We have many different influences and if I have to tag our style, I would say it’s ‘symphonic metal’, because we mix orchestra and big classical choirs with metal music in all its variety.”

Labels

What do you think about the fact that people compare your band with Epica?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “All the bands are compared with others, above all if they are new. It is logical, as we play metal mixed with classical music and big choirs. Gorka (grunter and keyboard player -red.) and me come from a classical background, but we are also metalheads since teenagers. So this style of music was the natural road to take for us. Actually we didn’t know about Epica when we started, we discovered them later.”

“Anyway, I cannot understand this obsession of labeling or comparing every band. I cannot imagine someone out the classical field, telling that he doesn’t like Beethoven because it’s a copy of Vivaldi. I don’t want to sound pretentious because of this comparison.”

Te singer of Diabulus In Musica really wants to open the discussion about the disadvantage of labeling bands in music.

“What I mean is, that we should focus more on enjoying the music. I listen to the music I like. So the more bands I find of the style I like, the better for me. Or does it only one band per genre has the right to exist? I don’t think so.

It’s not a matter of style, but a matter of quality and musical taste. I’m not going to like a band only because it is totally different from others, at least me, but maybe I’m wrong.”

What is your most favorite song to play live with Diabulus in Musica on stage?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “I enjoy every second on stage, so it’s very difficult to choose.”

Do you have some expectations about bands you want to play with?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “Not really, we have already played with some of our favorite bands, so I don’t know.  Any offer would be welcome because we love to play on stage.”

Is there anything you want to share with your fans?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “We are working hard to tour a lot this year. Actually we will start in May in Belgium and Germany. In October we will be touring around France, Spain and Germany. Also the performance in the anniversary of the MFVF is confirmed.

We would like also to come back to Latin America. We are doing all the effort we can to meet all of you on stage. Thanks for being there and thanks for showing your support on tour and on the Social Networks. Really appreciated!”

What do you want to tell to people that doesn’t know your music?

Zuberoa Aznárez: “ I would tell them that if they like metal, passionate music, soundtracks, classical music, big choirs and even folk they might find our musical offer interesting. I would emphasize that we don’t have only a musical influence, we like different things and we have no boundaries in creating music. You can expect anything from us.”

Draconian- interview on Metal Female Voices Fest

Doom metal band Draconian from Sweden, performed on the Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgium. Afterwards the band is gathered together to explain more about their new album.

Note from the writer: During the writing process of this recorded interview, the band reveals that vocalist Lisa Johansson leaves Draconian. It turns out to be the last interview where she’s involved in.

Touring

You have played songs from your new album ‘A Rose For The Apokalypse‘ in Mexico and recently in Moldavia and Ukraine. how was the reaction of the crowd in the different countries, and can you tell more about that?

Anders Jacobsson (vocalist): “It has been a couple of months since the release. Many people have heard the songs, so it is not really new to them I think. The response was really good. From our point a view we would like to try out new song,s and we would like adding songs to improve the set”.

Witch people are more enthusiastic in Moldavia or in the Ukraine?

Anders Jacobsson: “I don’t know, we have played in both countries once.  I think the people have been waiting to hear the new songs. We are trying to promote the new songs as good as we can”.

Frederik Johansson (bass): “We had fun to play the new songs: it is not new for us. Before “Turning Seasons Within” we have played new songs. It was more that we stood on stage and thought ‘oh we are going to play a new song’. Now we are more comfortable by playing those songs and there is lot’s of energy and it is great to play them”.

Which performance was the best one of al the shows you have played?

Anders Jacobsson: “We like several places, but we lost our laptop and did the show without the keyboard. We were surprised but it went good! Israel was great, Moldavia was intimate. But we also liked the show in Romania”.

New Album

In the review of ‘A Rose For The Apocalypse’ the album gets a rare 10/10.  The response are variable what people think of Draconian. How do you receive those critics?

Jerry Thorstensson (drums): “In the beginning we have read a lot of reviews but now it seems to get lost. The response is really good.”

Frederik Johansson: “We received a 6/10 from a Swedisch magazine. But they are a more traditional heavy metal magazine. They thought if we take away some parts of the songs, to make it more accessible. But then it would not be Draconian, so why bother.”

Anders Jacobsson: “I read some of the reviews, it’s always good to know what people think. I realize that people need more time with this new album, but they’re happy with it”.

Sweden

What kind of awards have you won earlier with Draconian and your albums?

Anders Jacobsson: “We have not won anything. We are just a Swedisch band releasing five albums. We hardly ever play in Sweden, there is not much in Scandinavia. We are sad about that en we have to reach out to other countries.

The only bands that counts are In Flames, Opeth and Katatonia in Sweden and they are to gothic. Katatonia is making bigger success outside our home country. Personally we do not feel sadness that we never get to play:we are over it. It is nice that family and friends get so see us.

There is nothing in Sweden we can win. We have a rock award (newspaper) in Sweden that means ‘everything’ and every year the same band wins this award. There are a lot of forgotten bands, good forgotten bands in Sweden”.

Inspiration

You are inspired by Opeth, Katatonia and much more bands, but what is your most inspiring band of all? Not only metal but also in popmusic?

Frederik Johansson: “Every emotional music is great, inspirations for me are: Slayer, Antrax, Twisted Sister, Kiss, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and Anathema.

Anders Jacobsson: Nowadays I listen to industrial and in my younger years I listened to Slayer and Antrax. In the younger years Lisa Johansson listened to Michael Jackson”.

With these members you have been working for many years right?

Frederik Johansson: “It’s six years now with these members. After the ‘Burning Halo’ we have decided to play without a keyboard player. We tried out a session keyboard player, but we did not want to replace him, but do it without a keyboard player. We bought a computer and since than we had the same sets”.

Recording Proces

How much time did it took to write this album to recording and producing it?

Johan Ericson (guitarist): “I wrote it in a couple of years. I have started in 2008 and than I continued, so it is hard to say. But I had lot’s of inspiration and influences from other music.

I recorded it on tape and went to the studio to write it there. Jerry and I are producers and our rehearsal space is in the studio. We recorded half of our album there. Guitars and bass and drums are recorded in the rehearsal room“.

Future

I know that you have played with a lot of bands, but can you tell me with whom you would like to play in the future?

Anders Jacobsson: “That is hard. But thinking about it, we would like to play before Paradiso Lost, but we do not know busy they are. We also love to play with Opeth or Saturnus”.

When there is a request for you to play somewhere in the world. How do you react to that?

Frederik Johansson: “ The management checks this out. We have a booking agency and we can choose. We only have to be free from our work. The management takes care of the visa. We also check out the previous years, the list of other bands, concerning festivals”.

After that it is time for the band to get some rest, it’s been a memorial evening.

Draconian – zangeres Lisa Johansson verlaat de band

Vandaag heeft de Zweedse doom-metal band Draconian bekend gemaakt dat zangeres Lisa Johansson de band verlaat. Met name omdat ze zich meer wil richten op haar gezin.

Johanssen sloot zich in 2002 aan bij de in 1994 opgerichte band en was voor het eerst te horen op de demo ‘Dark Oceans We Cry.’ De demo was het begin van de doorbraak van de band en niet veel later tekenden ze een contract met Napalm Records.

Daarna volgden nog vijf albums, met als laatste wapenfeit  ’A Rose For the Apocalypse‘, dat dit jaar uitkwam. Op 23 Oktober trad de band nog op tijdens het Metal Female Voices Festival. Dit was, zoals nu blijkt, het laatste optreden van Johansson.

De band laat weten erg dankbaar te zijn voor Lisa’s bijdrage over de jaren. Daarnaast benadrukken ze dat ze gewoon door zullen gaan met muziek maken en beloven ze een nieuwe tijd in te gaan vol productivieit en artistieke expressie.

Stream Of Passion – interview op Metal Female Voices

Stream of Passion is inmiddels in metal land een gerespecteerde naam geworden. Zij spelen nu voor de tweede keer op Metal Female Voices Fest en ik ben benieuwd hoe het de band nu vergaat. Wat volgt is een prettig gesprek met de gitaristen Eric Hazebroek en Stephan Schultz.

Darker Days

Jullie derde album “Darker Days” (zie album review Muzikantenweb) is nu een aantal maanden uit, hoe zijn de reacties hierop?

Eric en Stephan: “De CD is goed ontvangen, hij is net even anders dan de vorige “The Flame Within.” We denken dat het meer in balans is en de mensen reageren er heel goed op. De CD is toegankelijker dan het vorige album met iets meer stevige riffs”.

Hoe is het om dit nieuwe werk te spelen, terwijl je ook nog veel nummers speelt van de andere albums. Is deze variatie voor een bandlid echt nodig of maakt het niet uit wat je speelt?

Stephan Schultz: “Wat gitaar technisch opvallend is, is dat er tegenwoordig met meerdere stemmingen wordt gespeeld en je daardoor vijf gitaren nodig hebt en dat is af en toe wel eens lastig. Zeker als je de setlist wilt maken dan moet je daar rekening mee houden, anders worden de pauzes langer”.

Eric Hazebroek: “Het is zeker van belang dat we van te voren goed kijken welke nummers achter elkaar worden gespeeld. Niet dat we een onmogelijke taak hebben, om kort achter elkaar de nummers te spelen. Zoals Stefan zegt zijn er verschillende stemmingen, maar ook niet de standaardstemming, dus het wordt echt afwisselender.

Het is fijn om die variatie van nummers van de verschillende albums te hebben, omdat ze echt daadwerkelijk verschillend zijn. Ja er zitten wat meer rustpunten in bepaalde nummers, en ze zijn heel leuk om te spelen“.

Stephan: “We hebben nu een paar acht-snarige nummers en een paar zeven -snarige nummers en dat maakt het voor mij ook erg leuk.”

Mexicaanse Invloeden

De nieuwe Mexicaanse invloeden ten opzichte van het oude werk vind ik verassend te noemen. De harmonica in combinatie met de zang van Marcela Bovio (songwriter, zangeres, violist) valt men name op.

Er wordt meer in het Spaans gezongen in combinatie met het Engels. Het heeft net even een andere sound dan andere female fronted metal bands. Hoe staan jullie daar zelf tegenover?

Stephan: “Wij vinden het heel mooi en wij vinden het echt een goede toevoeging die Mexicaanse invloeden en het komt dichter bij Marcela en haar roots”.

Eric:”Daar is van tevoren over nagedacht bij deze plaat. Bij de eerste zong Marcela al in het Spaans, bij de tweede is het er een beetje bij ingeschoten. Toen we begonnen met deze plaat is er nadrukkelijk gedacht ‘hoe kunnen we het zo brengen dat het meer persoonlijker wordt voor Marcela.’ Dat is vrij makkelijk in principe als je er zo over nadenkt.”

Stephan: “Het is voor Marcela echt een must geworden, omdat zij uit Mexico komt en daar veel ellende is zoals drugsgebruik, maffia en haar familie woont er nog. Dat raakt haar heel erg.“

Ik vind het een groot verschil, dat door al deze invloeden jullie warmer klinken en een unieke sound hebben gecreëerd. Jullie zijn een warme heavy band geworden.

Eric: “Het is emotioneler geworden, en dat spreekt mensen meer aan dan een kille koude band. Het temperament van een Mexicaanse zangers voegt in ieder geval veel toe en dat voel je.” 

Media

Mijn collega Helena Torstensson heeft jullie CD gerecenseerd met een 9. Ik heb de review nog eens gelezen, waar ze het vooral heeft over de Mexicaanse invloeden, maar ze vindt Marcela Bovio wat minder goed verstaanbaar in het Engels. Ik vind zelf als je vaker naar Marcela’s zanglijnen luistert dat het dan wel meevalt en dat een kwestie is van wennen.

Eric en Stephan: “Feit is dat Marcela Bovio geen native Engelse spreker is, maar dat ze het enorm goed doet. Niemand heeft een grotere talenknobbel dan Marcela. Niet alleen het Engels, Nederlands en Spaans beheerst zij, zelfs meerdere talen”.

Lezen jullie de reviews die jullie krijgen en vinden jullie dit belangrijk dat dit gedaan wordt over de Cd’s en de concerten.

Stephan Schultz: “Als we de kans krijgen lezen we ze wel, want we vinden het belangrijk voor het verspreiden van het feit dat de CD uit is.”

Eric Hazebroek: “Het gaat ons niet om beïnvloeden, en we zullen niet opletten wat recesenten schrijven. Muziek maken is wat wij persoonlijk graag doen, wat komt uit jezelf. Het is leuk als mensen positieve kritiek geven.

Als het om muziektechnische dingen gaat zoals vals zingen of als er dingen niet kloppen en dat wordt opgemerkt, dan kun je daar aan werken. Maar als je de stijl van de muziek niet leuk vindt of saai; dat is allemaal persoonlijk en daar kun je een stuk minder mee”.

Leaves’ Eyes

Niet voor de eerste keer speelt Stream Of Passion samen met de Duitse band Leaves’ Eyes, een succesvolle combinatie.
Hoe was de tour met Leaves’ Eyes naar Frankrijk en Engeland? Kun je daar iets over zeggen?

Eric en Stephan: “Dit was een minitour inderdaad. We hebben heel rustig aan gedaan. We kenden ze al van de ‘Beauty en the Beast tour’ van twee jaar geleden en het ijs was al gebroken. Het klikt heel super met Leaves’Eyes en als het toen niet was bevallen, dan hadden we dit nu ook niet kunnen doen.

Het zijn hele relaxte mensen en om de tourbus te moeten delen, gaat allemaal gemakkelijk. Het is een internationale band en er zitten nu ook twee Nederlanders in. We respecteren de muziek van elkaar heel erg en het was een groot feest, prima verzorgd.

We hebben veel contacten met de fans gehad; praatjes gemaakt terwijl wij een drankje dronken. Hartverwarmend hoe de mensen hebben gereageerd in het buitenland”.

Eric: “Er was een klein onderliggend verhaal om naar Engeland te gaan. Zoals je misschien wel weet is vier jaar geleden, met de vorige line-up, werd Stream of Passion tegen gehouden bij de grens om allerlei redenen. Dus het was even spannend bij de Douane. Het is gelukt, we hebben vriendelijk gekeken en Marcela ging als laatste door de poort en ook zij mocht door.

Dit beïnvloedt de feeststemming tijdens de optredens en we waren enorm blij dat dit helemaal goed is gegaan. De mensen die bij de Engelse optredens kwamen, hadden rekening gehouden met de vorige keer want toen duurde het allemaal langer voordat we bij de zaal waren. Veel goede reacties achteraf en of SOP vaker naar Engeland wil komen”.

MFVF

De tour wordt hier in België vandaag afgesloten, eerst nog spelen en dan gaan jullie dit nog vieren?

Eric: “Het feest is vrijdag al geweest en we hebben Leaves’ Eyes al gedag gezegd, want zij hebben gisteren op MFVF gespeeld. Wij gaan vanavond gewoon na Therion zelfstandig naar huis. Zo’n tour is toch best slopend. We hebben allemaal nu rust nodig”.

Jullie mogen straks knallen maar hoe laden jullie je op voor een optreden? We zitten hier nu wel vlak voor de show heel relaxed maar veel bier, meditatie of juist gewoon niks?

Stephan Schultz: “Ik speel altijd even warm, om de solo’s lekker soepel te kunnen doen. Net voor de show even een paar keer op en neer springen om de adrenaline te laten stromen. En met zo’n groot podium als vandaag komt het helemaal goed. Ik heb er zin in”.

Eric: “Voor mij is dat iets anders, ik hoef geen solo’s te spelen. Ik heb mijn iPod bij me en ik luister dan naar agressieve muziek om op te laden, zodat ik adrenaline heb voordat ik het podium op loop en niet als een zoutzak op het podium sta”.

Mogen jullie nog nummers spelen van het eerste album ‘Embrace The Storm’ of is dat uitgesloten?

Eric Hazebroek: “Neen hoor, deze nummers komen nog steeds voorbij in de shows. Wij mogen dat nog doen er is geen restrictie. Er is toen der tijd een DVD uitgebracht van Ayreon waarop wij spelen, maar dit zijn nummers van Arjen Lucassen. Het zou raar zijn als wij die spelen, want hij zit niet meer in de band.

Deze oude nummers zijn toch onderdeel van het SOP verhaal. Het zou raar zijn als we die niet spelen. Er is wel een verschil tussen de eerste CD “Embrace the Storm” ten opzichte van “Darker Days” maar dit maar geeft juist de variatie aan de setlist”.

The Belgium Metale Female Voices Fest opens their doors for international fans on Friday 21th October, after long days of preparations and counting down till this very moment. It is the beginning of their ninth edition.

Besides the variation of bands that will perform in the Oktoberhallen from Wieze, the international fan base is growing every year. It is a musical reunion as well backstage as in the front of the venue.

Every year the organization, in the hands of Philty and his team, try to improve facilities and add something special. Also it is a real challenge to create such an interesting line-up.

On Friday photographer Monica Duffels captured the stage appearances from German gothic band Xandria, folk-metal formation Battlelore and opener of the evening Bare Infinity.

Metal Female Voices Fest – last confirmation and complete line-up

The Belgium festival Metal Female Voices Fest announced the very last band for their ninth edition. The festival about female fronted metal bands is from 21 till 23 Ocotber 2011 in Wieze, Belgium. Three days of international meetings, gothic music in a very special atmosphere!

Theatre Des Vampires is the last band that fills the total line-up. Excellent headliners are presented like Doro, Therion and Leaves’ Eyes! Also unique performances of Xandria, Stream Of Passion (new album) and Battlelore. The running order will be announched soon, but the good news is that the line-up of the three days are complete.

Besides the preparations of this edition, the organization is very busy with the creation of the MFVF – live DVD! It will contains the MFVF 7 and 8 edition from 2009, 2010 and extra’s. Most of the bands have given permission to use the live video to their songs. The release is scheduled for 21 October 2011.

MFVF 2011 – special offer and more bands confirmed

The Belgium female fronted metal fest  Metal Female Voices , has a strong line-up to reveal on their ninth edition on 21 till 23 October 2011 in Wieze.

Most recent the Finnish pagan metal band KIVIMETSÄN DRUID is confirmed.

Metal queen Doro will make her entrance together with Therion and the well known formation around singer Liv Kristine, Leaves’Eyes and sister Carmen is there too with her folk band Midnattsol.

Dutch proud Stream Of Passion will make the line-up stronger, hopefully with new material to promote. Currently the band is busy in the studio to finish their third album.

Benedictium is no longer an underground name, with lot’s of promotion from this festival agency. A very strong band. Also Deadlock garantees a very dynamic show, and many fans will be happy to see them in this special set.
