De naam Mark Lanegan dook eind jaren tachtig voor het eerst op, toen hij als frontman van the Screaming Trees furore maakte. In de jaren negentig spatte deze cultband uiteen, maar bleef Lanegan muziek maken.

Zijn (solo-)carrière heeft de nodige ups en downs gekend, onder andere vanwege druggebruik, maar hij is voortdurend productief gebleven. De vele contacten binnen de muziekindustrie helpen hem hierbij steeds een handje.

Lanegan fungeert als (gast)zanger bij Queens Of The Stone Age, werkt regelmatig samen met Isobell Campbell (ex-lid van Belle & Sebastian) en is actief in projecten als the Gutter Twins (met Greg Dulli van the Afghan Whigs) en the Soulsavers.

Met ‘zijn’ Mark Lanegan Band is het na het bejubelde album ‘Bubblegum’ acht jaar lang stil geweest. Vandaar dat er rijkhalzend werd uitgekeken naar het nieuwe werk van Mark Lanegan Band en de verwachtingen dan ook hooggespannen zijn. En terecht als je leest welke (gast-) muzikanten hem vergezellen op dit album.

Het is Alain Johannes (oprichter Eleven en bekend van samenwerkingen met o.a.Chris Cornell, QOTSA en Desert Sessions), die de meeste credits voor deze plaat mag ontvangen. Hij heeft deze plaat niet alleen opgenomen, gemixed en geproduceerd maar is ook te horen op zang, gitaar, bass, keyboards en percussie. Hij drukt muzikaal een grote stempel op de, door Lanegan, geschreven nummers. Het geheel klinkt verzorgd en uitgebalanceerd, maar laat voldoende ruimte voor Lanegan’s stemgeluid.

“Blues Funeral” opent furieus met het ronkende “The Gravedigger’s Song”. De stuwende en sferische muziek kleurt perfect bij het donkere en o zo karakteristieke stemgeluid van Mark Lanegan. Dit fraaie nummer vormt een logisch vervolg op de nummers van ‘Bubblegum’ (2004) en is direct hét hoogtepunt van de plaat.

Met “Bleeding Muddy Water” neemt Lanegan wat gas terug, waardoor zijn stemgeluid nog centraler komt te staan. Dit slepende en trage nummer kent weinig hoogtepunten, op een prachtig melodisch refrein na. “Gray Goes Black” is de eerste single van dit album. In deze song zijn disco invloeden te horen, voornamelijk vanwege het gebruik van een drumcomputer. Saillant detail is dat Jack Irons de drums op ‘Blues Funeral’ voor zijn rekening heeft genomen. Irons is mede-oprichter van The Red Hot Chilli Peppers en drumde in Eleven en bij Pearl Jam.

In “Riot In My house” wordt er weer flink gerockt. Op de achtergrond hoort men het kenmerkende gitaarspel van Joshua Homme (QOTSA). Het catchy “Quiver syndrome” komt het dichts bij het oude werk van the Screaming Trees, al voegen de afleidende computerpiepjes mijn inziens niets toe.

Er staan geen echte missers op dit album al kent het wel mindere songs en momenten. “Ode To Sad Disco”  bevat muzikale elementen van Keli Hlodversson. Disco en new wave invloeden brengen je hier terug naar de jaren ’80 en ’90. Deze genres passen minder goed bij Lanegan’s stemgeluid of is dat een kwestie van gewenning?

“Levithian” is niet spannend genoeg, totdat Chris Goss (Masters of Reality) het nummer ‘op komt leuken’ met zijn hemelse koortjes. Dat Mark Lanegan geen ‘vrolijke Frans’ is, weet eenieder. Ook op dit album toont hij zijn donkere kant. Zijn stemgeluid zorgt voor de bluesy en duistere sfeer, maar ook zijn teksten zijn niet altijd even opgewekt. Het dromerige “St. Louis Elegy” kent fraaie zanglijnen (ook van Greg Dulli) en bevat prachtige teksten.

Conclusie

Het is niet eerlijk of niet reeël om dit album met voorganger ‘Bubblegum’ te vergelijken. Het is een nieuw album in een andere tijd en met nieuwe muzikale invloeden. De kwaliteiten komen op deze plaat pas na meerdere luisterbeurten bovendrijven, een typisch gevalletje van een groeiplaat dus!

Of het nu blues, rock, disco of new wave invloeden zijn, het lukt Mark Lanegan steeds om met zijn stemgeluid te domineren en te overtuigen. Zijn melodiën en zanglijnen nestelen zich langzaam in je hoofd om er vervolgens niet meer te vertrekken. Deze man heeft simpelweg de gave om weemoed, angst, pijn en treurnis prachtig te laten klinken!

Eddie Vedder – twee solo optredens in Carré

Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis maakt zanger Eddie Vedder de oversteek naar Europa voor een beperkt aantal soloconcerten. De frontman van Pearl Jam speelt op 25 en 26 juli in het Koninklijk Theater Carré in Amsterdam.

Vedder’s tweede solo album ‘Ukulele Songs‘ is recent genomineerd voor een Grammy Award voor beste Folk album. Zijn eerste album is bekend als soundtrack van de film ‘Into The Wild‘ uit 2007, wat Eddie Vedder een Golden Globe Award oplevert. Daarmee nam zijn solo carrière een vogelvlucht.

In 2011 is ‘Water on the Road‘ uitgebracht, een live-concert DVD van zijn optreden in Washington op 16 en 17 augustus 2008. Solo tourt de zanger veel door Amerika. Nu is eindelijk Europa aan de beurt en Amsterdam speelt hierin met de aftrap van zijn tour een grote rol. Een unieke setting om een van de grootste rockzangers ter wereld te zien!

Pearl Jam – extra concert 27 juni in Ziggo Dome Amsterdam ook uitverkocht

De kaarten voor het concert van Pearl Jam op 26 juni en 27 juni 2012 in Ziggo Dome Amsterdam zijn uitverkocht. Vanmorgen maakte Mojo de extra show bekend en wederom ging de kaartverkoop erg snel.

Wel  is Pearl Jam deze zomer nog op festivals in Europa te zien. Ze zijn na ruim twintig jaar terug in de stad waar het allemaal begon in Nederland, maar dan enkele maten groter.

De Ziggo Dome is momenteel nog in aanbouw, maar zal voor de concerten van Pearl Jam plaats gaan bieden aan ruim 15.000 bezoekers. De concertzaal wordt gebouwd als een ‘Black Box’ waar het draait om de beste akoestiek en zichtlijnen voor versterkte live muziek. Ook comfort en entertainment staan hoog in het vaandel bij de nieuwe Ziggo Dome. Punkrockband X uit Los Angeles is gedurende de tour de special guest van Pearl Jam.

In 2011 vierde Pearl Jam het twintig-jarig bestaan in Alpine Valley (WI) en tourde vervolgens door Canada, Zuid Amerika, Centraal Amerika en Mexico. Ook bracht de band de film ‘Pearl Jam Twenty’ uit, samen met een bijbehorend boek en soundtrack.

Pearl Jam – zomerconcert 26 juni in Ziggo Dome Amsterdam

Op dinsdag 26 juni 2012 zal Pearl Jam het Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam aan doen voor een concert. De band heeft dit zojuist vanuit Seattle aangekondigd. De kaartverkoop begint volgende week zaterdag, op 17 december om 10.00 uur.

Tussen 20 juni en 10 juli 2012 zal Pearl Jam drie Europese festivals te headlinen en zes eigen shows neer te zetten. Daarmee is Pearl Jam na ruim twintig jaar terug in de stad waar het allemaal begon in Nederland, maar dan enkele maten groter. De Ziggo Dome is momenteel nog in aanbouw, maar zal voor het concert van Pearl Jam plaats gaan bieden aan ruim 15.000 bezoekers.

Recentelijk heeft Pearl Jam zijn debuut ‘ Ten‘ opnieuw uitgebracht samen met de DVD ‘Twenty‘ om het twintig jarig jubileum van de grunge band te vieren. Afgelopen jaren speelde de band regelmatig in Nederland, van uitverkochte shows in Ahoy, Goffertpak Nijmegen en nu dus een eigen optreden in juni.

Pearl Jam – trailer PJ20 documentary

The famous American rockband Pearl Jam celebrates twenty years of existence with a documentary made by Cameron Crowe. “PJ20″ is the result of twenty years of material. On 17th August it is twenty years since the world wide success of “Ten” and hitsong “Alive” still representive for the Grunge/Seatle Sound nowadays.

There is a special website created for this documentary. Pearl Jam writes on it about the film: “Pearl Jam Twenty chronicles the years leading up to the band’s formation, the chaos that ensued soon-after their rise to megastardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a trusted circle that would surround them—giving way to a work culture that would sustain them.

Told in big themes and bold colors with blistering sound, the film is carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely-seen and never-before seen footage spanning the band’s career. Pearl Jam Twenty is the definitive portrait of Pearl Jam: part concert film, part intimate insider-hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists.”

In September the documentary’ll have it’s live premiere in Toronto on the International Film Festival. Pearl Jam is set to release the documentary Pearl Jam Twenty worldwide on September 20th in select theaters for one night only, with a full week run of the film beginning Friday, September 23rd in key markets. The film will be shown at the highest caliber of theaters in select cities in the U.S. and internationally.

Eddie Vedder – streaming second solo album

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder is streaming his second solo album “Ukulele Songs” online on We7.

It will be released in a few days, togerther with the  live concert film ‘Water on the Road’ on  31th May. Both through Pearl Jam’s Monkeywrench Records. His solo debut ‘Into The Wild ‘ (2007) is the successful soundtrack of the movie, based on an acoustic guitar sound and the unique voice of Eddie Vedder.

Also Pearl Jam is working in the studio on a new studio album, but the frontman has time to work on his side project and even tour with it this summer. ”I’ve been writing songs on the ukulele for at least 10 years” explains Vedder. He’s playing this instrument since he is 14 years old: “The motto is less strings more melody” he states.

In Revolver Magazine he explains more about his own label: ”One thing you might suggest to a young band is don’t get involved in any kind of long-term contract, because everything changes on a bimonthly basis: The way people hear music and access it, the way it is distributed..”

“You have to be able to grow and move with the organism that is the music industry. You need to maintain flexibility. Ownership of your own stuff is key and then you’re able to dictate on a present-terms basis what would be the most effective way to protect yourself and what you’ve created. You also don’t want to lock yourself into a situation where a major label owns part of your touring and merchandise.”

Eddie Vedder – second solo album and concert film

Eddie Vedder revealed more details about his second solo album. It’s called ‘Ukulele Songs’ and also the live concert film ‘Water on the Road‘ will be released on Tuesday, May 31st through Pearl Jam’s Monkeywrench Records.

The first single ‘Longing To Belong‘ will be international on sale  and downloadable tomorrow 22th March, and listen to it here.

Pearl Jam – working on tenth studio album

To the website ‘Billboard.com’ bass player Jeff Amount  revealed that the famous American rock band Pearl Jam, is working on their tenth studio album. This year the band celebrates their twenty years of existence.

Also a solo tour from frontman Eddie Vedder is scheduled (currently touring in Australia) and there are rumors that he is writing a new album, the long awaited follow-up from his debut ‘Into The Wild‘ (the movie soundtrack in 2007).

They have written twenty-five songs for the new Pearl Jam album, to be recorded later this year. “April will be the time where we get together and learn to play all these demos and figure out which 12-15 of them float to the top,” Ammount said.

Pearl Jam is focussed on putting together reissues of their albums ‘Vs.’ and ‘Vitalogy’ as they did successfully with their debut ‘Ten‘ a few years ago. The band is also working on a Cameron Crowde-directed documentary and book celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band, that they are eager to look forward to the future.

It’s clear it will be a very busy year for Pearl Jam. In addition to recording a new Pearl Jam album, the group are planning a special 20th anniversary destination festival tentatively scheduled for Labor Day weekend in America.

Pearl Jam is marking their twenty years of existence with a new live album.  2011 will be a year long celebration, the anniversary festivities kick off in a few weeks with the release of Live on Ten Legs.

A hint of what more to expect in the months ahead, taken from the official website from the band.
