Alestormis a folk/power metal band from Perth, Scotland. Their music is characterized by a pirate theme, and as a result has been dubbed a “Pirate metal” band at a popular heavy metal related website.

From the beginning the band was called Battleheart but when they signed on with Napalm Records in 2007 they changed their name to Alestorm.  Their debut album ” Captain Morgan’s Revenge” was released in January 2008.

The title track “Back Through Time” fits the soundtrack of a pirate movie. The intro that gives you a taste of exactly how fast this musicians can play. As the intro plains out, the song really begins with melodic guitars and beat, followed by Christopher Bowes strong and demanding voice. Very interesting and good sounding instrumental parts that I enjoy listening to.I like the pace of this song and the energy it brings.

The Sunk’n Norwegian” opens with a fast and merry sounding violin. Soon enough rough guitars and a clever beat sets in and creates an intense and cool mix of instruments. I enjoy hearing this combination all through the song. The chorus is catchy and easy to get on your mind together with the haunting melody of the violin.

“Scraping the Barrel” is a slow and intense song that quickly won my heart. I love the melody and the way Christopher performs, having a challenging and sure voice, telling the story of the song. He has such a passion and the instrumental parts of this song are simply brilliant.

It took me some time to get used to the sound of Alestorm. It is sometimes hard to understand what Christopher Bowes is singing, but the brilliant music is what captures and kept my interest all through this album. I can honestly say that I have not heard anything quite like this before. First I was actually unsure if I would be able to review this album, but after giving it a chance and listening through it I was convinced about both the sound and theme. You have to give it some time, but when you are a metal fan you will like it!
