Van Canto – Break The Silence

text: Helena Torstensson
band: Van Canto
album: Break The Silence
genre: A Cappella Metal
release: 21 September 2011
label: Napalm Records / Border

Van Canto is a Cappella metal bad from Germany formed in 2006 and consists of five singers and one drummer. While only two of the five singers perform the lead vocals, the other three will instead use their voices to imitate the guitars and the bass.

Also a little help of some amplifiers, in an attempt to sound closer to the original instruments. “Break The Silence” is the bands fourth album.

If I Die In Battle” is the first song on “Break The Silence” and once you get used to the different sounds then everything quickly falls into place.

It begins with a slow intro where you hear first male voices lead by Dennis Schunke sing a line that delicately is repeated by Inga Scharf. Dennis takes hold of the microphone once more and the song get’s faster and more powerful. A good rhythm and their wellkown mix of a female and male voices, makes it an excellent start.

The first single from the album is “The Seller Of Souls” is a powerful and cool song that instantly becomes a favorite. I have an interesting sensation of recognition, yet I am pretty sure that I have not heard anything like this before. This song brings a combination of playfulness and seriousness that I like very much. The moving melody together with the good lyrics sung by Dennis Schunke and Inga Scharf creates one masterpiece of song!

Spelled in Waters” features Marcus Siepen from Blind Guardian. It is an intense song that really reaches out and touches every listener. I love the melody and the way the male and female voices are entwined, shadowing each other. Also giving each other space and finding a good balance . I really like the sound of the guitar that fits perfectly to the whole moving experience, that this song is.

Master of the Wind” (Manowar Cover) begins slow and fragile, it´s a pleasure to listen to Inga Scharf’s voice “haunted” by distant male voices. The floating keyboard moves in and out of focus, all through this moving and special song: a dynamic combination.

The beauty of reviewing a band ” blank” (not listened to it before) means that you have no expectations, and mostly hope for a good musical journey. “Break The Silence” really took me by surprise. I found myself really falling for this a cappella metal and I really enjoy every minute of it. What I like the most, is the way the different vocals build up the songs and create an intense atmosphere. There is a good mix of powerful songs as well as slower ones on this album and I adore the creative feeling of it. A very new and interesting sound is presented.
