The 69 Eyes – X

text: Helena Torstensson
band: The 69 Eyes
album: X
genre: Goth/Rock
release: 28 September 2012
label: Nuclear Blast

The 69 Eyes are a Finnish gothic rock band that was formed in 1989 by Jyrki 69, Archzie, Timo-Timo, Lotto and Bazie. In 1992 Jussi 69 replaced the original drummer and the line-up has stayed the same since then. Three years has gone since the last album ‘Back In Blood’ and when the tenth album titled ‘X’ is released, it shows that the Helsinki Vampires are back with what could very well be their best album so far.

The first song on ‘X’ caught me happily off guard, ”Love Runs Away” kick starts with heavy guitars and drums, and I enjoy the energy of it all. For me it is also a pleasure hearing how the singer Jyrki has developed his voice: it sounds stronger and voluminous,  in a way that is hard to describe. The great chorus lifts up the song and it get crowds moving when they play it live.

For me this album shows a more mature band, that has not hunted on forward. Instead they have looked back and “Black” is a good example of this since it has the sound and energy from some of the older 69 Eyes songs. I enjoy the cool guitar and drum intro, but also the way this song opens up. Followed by softer male vocals that grow stronger in the chorus. The song creates a good atmosphere and I like the clever play with words.

The second single “Borderline” is an excellent choice to introduce the album, it captured my interest since the first time I listened to it, but it took some time to stop the repeat-button. The music brings a laid back feeling, a pleasure listening to and when Jyrki’s soft voice joins in it is a perfect combination. I enjoy how the strong and thoughts reveal a story. Together it creates a very special atmosphere. This one clearly is added to my ‘list of favourites’ by this band.

“When A Love Comes To An End” is the last song on the album and it is another great example on how this band have grown. It starts with an intro of rain falling down, before Jyrki starts to tell the story of the song in a very sincere and strong way. Such a wonderful combination of music, melody and vocals. The lyrics moves in circles and I enjoy how it carries on and on.

Conclusion

I’ve read somewhere that ‘X’ is the album the whole band is the most proud of, and maybe most bands say that about their latest one, but in this case I believe and understand what they mean. Because on their tenth album The 69 Eyes have taken everything to a higher level. As they have returned to their roots and wrote music that fit them perfectly and make them stand stronger. This kind of development shows a band that learned their own strength and  if they continue on like this,  I really can’t wait for the next album! Now the only thing left to say, is that I really look forward to hear many of these songs live.
