genre: pop music
release: 4 November 2010

His name will always be connected to the sensitive ballade ‘ You’re Beautiful’ a milestone for further development of pop artist James Blunt. With songs like ‘Wiseman’ and ‘So Long Jimmy’ from his debut Back To Bedlam’ (2005) he proved to have a very creative and talented mind; leading to dynamic rock songs and catchy melodies.

On his second album ‘All The Lost Souls’ (2007) melancholy and darker songs are presented by James Blunt. On ‘1973’ a perfect mixture between the seventies vibe and modern rock is born. Critics are building up over the years about the rising star Blunt, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is a very talented musician; selling millions of records and composing unforgettable hit songs.

Song by song Review

On this new album James Blunt takes a big step forward in his career: exploring new roads, what leads to more variation and a mature sound. Heartbreaking ballades are still an important trademark, but the first single ‘ Stay The Night’ represents a dynamic, vivid band what leads to a strong rock/pop album. Little details ‘betray’ how much energy is spent on this production.

Dangerous’ is a more progressive song. A drumbeat mixed with high resonating guitars, are unpredictable. Blunt is not always searching to make the song beautiful, and the raw edge of his voice makes it more alive. The excellent dragging guitar sound created by Ben Castle has a prominent position in the mix.

Then a more sensitive song is building up the excitement ‘Best Laid Plans’ has the typical Blunt sound with fragile, high melodies and the romantically lyrics women seems to adore. It isn’t the question if he means it or not, James Blunt  (vocalist, piano, guitar) can translate the emotions into such a powerful song that it stays in your head and gets under your skin.

So Far Gone’ has a more rock-orientated instrumentation. Excellent work of the whole band and production team. It shows quality to switch from heavy guitars to a fragile piano sound and on top of that the mature Blunt. It has a well thought-out melody, no wonder that it is the second video of the album.

No Tears’ is a mid-tempo ballade, but the story is a bit dark and the atmosphere is different than before. The classical piano of Paul Beard in contradiction with the guitars, hits you in the eye. Also the arrangements and violins make the song richer.

Superstar,’ is an ironical song with the most up-tempo and groovy sound on the whole album. John Garrison on bas with catchy guitar riffs result into a progressive sound: the six men are a golden combination. Even a higher voice to throw the cast in further success.

The power grows on ‘ These Are The Words’ a very catchy pop song that rises the adrenaline. On ‘Calling Out Your Name’ James Blunt is ‘painting’ a landscape of emotions so strong that it moves you. He shows the world that is voice is still developing into a wider spectrum.

With a catch in the voice ‘Heart Of Cold’ is one of the best songs of the album, focus on the talented and dynamic drums from Karl Brazil.

‘I’ll Be Your Man’ is again a strong song for many reasons. Glance-role for the ensemble and co-writer Kevin Griffin resulting in an adrenaline boost. ‘Turn Me Own’ has the same vibe, with very technical and raw guitars.

‘If Time Is All I Have’ is the acoustic bonus track. In such a setting you can totally focus on the natural voice of James Blunt. You hear every raw tone and breath. Also when he is demanding a lot of himself, trying to translate his emotions.

Conclusion

James Blunt is still challenging himself and his band to discover new musical paths. He is able to make you cry, because of his clear, emotional and unreserve voice. ‘Some Kind Of Trouble will grow when you listen to it more often, because there are so many layers and little details to discover.

An interesting and unpredictable album. All the songs are little diamonds and  it’s no surprise when it brings James Blunt even more success than before: well deserved when you work that hard and show so much passion!

lyrics ‘ So Far Gone’

Tell me the wars you’re fighting
Behind the smile you’re hiding
All the things I know you want to say
We tried our best to find us
But there are no lights to guide us

I can’t sleep beside a stranger now
(and) Piece by piece we fall apart
With every beat slows down my heart

chorus:
So I’ll just say what you won’t say
and I’ll take the blame if it is for your sake
No turning back on what you can’t save
So far gone
Yeah, we’re so far gone

I’ve tried hard to remember
This prison cell used to be a shelter
Now we’re just looking for the best way out
I can’t fight you anymore
You’re already one step out the door

So I’ll just say what you won’t say
and I’ll take the blame if it is for your sake
No turning back on what you can’t save

So far gone,
yeah we’re so far gone

And this is the face of letting go
And these are things we already know
So I’ll say what you won’t say
and I’ll take the blame if it is for your sake
No turning back on what you can’t save

so far gone
we’re so far gone

So I’ll say what you won’t say
and I’ll take the blame if it is for your sake
No turning back on what you can’t save

So far gone,
yes we’re so far gone
yes we’re so far gone

So I’ll just what you won’t say
